How to Check a Used Car Part Before You Pay

21 October 2026 · 5 min read

Most problems with used parts are easy to prevent if you check a few things before you pay, not after the part is on your car. This checklist works whether you are buying in person or from a quote you received online.

1. Match the part to your car, not to the picture

Two parts can look the same and still not fit. Give the vendor your make, model, year, fuel type and variant, and the old part's number if it has one. For engine, electronic and gearbox parts, the part number or chassis number is the safest way to confirm fitment.

2. Ask for photos of the actual part

A stock image tells you nothing about the part you will receive. Ask for clear photos of the real part from more than one side, including the connectors, mounting points and any label or number. Scratches, cracks, rust and repairs should be visible in the photos.

3. Get the condition grade

A price with no condition is not a quote. Ask which grade the part is: A for near-new, B for good working condition, C for functional with visible wear. Then compare quotes of the same grade with each other.

4. Ask where the part came from

A genuine vendor can tell you which car the part came off and why that car was scrapped. Parts from a car written off after an accident that did not touch that part are usually fine. Be careful with electrical parts and control units from flooded cars.

5. Ask if it was tested

For anything electrical or mechanical, such as an alternator, starter motor, AC compressor or ECU, ask whether it was tested and how. A part that was tested is a safer buy than one sold as seen.

6. Agree what happens if it is wrong

Before you pay, know the return terms. On Xspare, you can report a wrong, damaged or incompatible part within 7 days of delivery, and a part that arrives damaged or defective should be reported within 48 hours with photos. Cancelling is free until the vendor marks your order as processing. Read the full Shipping and Returns policy so you know what is covered.

7. Check it again when it arrives

Open the package and compare the part with your old one and with the photos before you fit it. If something is wrong, take photos and report it straight away. Parts that have already been installed are not eligible for return, so do not fit a part you have not checked.
